About A Wink and A Smile

Filed under: film — Deirdre @ 9:40 am

Filming has begun for A Wink and A Smile, a new musical documentary from local filmmaker Deirdre Allen Timmons, exploring Seattle’s glittering and glamorous nouveau burlesque scene.

A Wink and a Smile follows the lives of ten women as they study the art of the striptease. The transformation from curious amateurs to burlesque divas is alternately hilarious and profound, but always intimate, from redefining sexuality to confronting body image. Lectures are illustrated with performances from Seattle’s burlesque community with original music from Orchestra L’Pow and additional music from artists throughout the U.S.

Burlesque is booming, and its resurgence in popular culture has raised a few eyebrows, and not just because of dropping knickers. “No one comes to a burlesque show to see naked women anymore,” performer Miss Indigo Blue told the Seattle Times. “That gets boring, right? The real performance is what we’re saying while we take off our clothes.”

The variety of provocateurs and performances in burlesque is what first attracted Timmons to the project: “As I began to explore Seattle’s scene, I found men and women of all ages and all body types boldly throwing down hilarious and beautiful striptease acts—peeling and revealing their way through stories that made me laugh, cry, and sometimes wonder, ‘How did they do that?’”

An intoxicating mix of private and public, A Wink and A Smile tells the story of students and performers who expose more than their bodies, and put gender, power and identity under the spotlight.

The film is the first feature-length project from Golden Echo Films.
